Are the Glassen Plains THE DESERT?

Post  B_Rad on Wed Feb 08, 2012 3:50 pm

So, are the Glassen Plains going to be the biggest, most severe desert of Emathar? I think it should be.

If so, this would also be the desert that the Nomads wandered in for decades. They probably came into contact with the Dwarves at some point, and their languages are going to show some similarities/loanwords/etc.

What say you? Shocked

1) There is a vast expanse of thick-rooted grass covering the Plains.
On the surface, the plants appear to be related to a simple field grass, and grow about 2 feet in height. Where this grass is different from the usual is that its roots go down to unprecedented depths, making it next to impossible to farm or till the ground in any related way.

Last I heard, we were still going with the idea. The vast desert is extremely overdone.

ahhhhhhh i forgot that the glassen plains isn't the desert... thank you, Aidan.

okay then. the desert and the Glassen Plains = two different things.

"this would also be the desert that the Nomads wandered in for decades."

yes, there will still be a desert, and your ideas still stand. just to clarify.

When you look at the map, where it says "desert" its meant to say "glassen plains", but we'll go into more depth in other topics

That was what I originally thought. Then I doubted myself.

I think we should still have a vast desert, though, which would be named "Ruvoren". I'll come up with another name for the Glassen Plains in Mannish. I don't think a vast desert is unrealistic. What world wouldn't have at least one?

So, in response to the wiki page which says this:

The original home of the Nomads is not precisely known, but it is certain that they lived in an area that was most often covered by direct sunlight. This is why their curse involved the torment of the Sun (more on this below). It is generally held, and the oral tradition supports this notion, that the Nomads were originally from a secluded, open area of Emathar, the exact whereabouts of which are currently unknown.

I'm thinking that the original land of the Nomads could be where the Glassen Plains are now located (at our point of attack). This would mean that the (VAST) desert would be somewhere near the plains. We should work this out. It would also make sense in that the Dwarves may have the most records of the original Nomadic civilzation, as they would have discovered remnants of structures and what not.

Perhaps the Nomad's were tasked with keeping tabs on the plains, but failed to do it somehow. The sun-curse drove them from this open and sunny area in an effort to find relief - but they were only to be lost in the desert.

I'm thinking the majority of it would be on the other side of the mountain range (the sunless mountains?)

Yes. Ok, I agree. Scratch the Glassen Plains / Nomad idea!
