Underground city Empty Underground city

The Dwarfs excavate lots of sand anyways, so it would be plausible for them to set up shop someplace. eventually it gets bigger due to demand of space, and it turns into, basically, a small city. Very loosely managed, poor up-keep, good place for bad people to hide. like where this is going?

Meh. When building underground, the dwarves would have to maintain some form of organization or they'd risk collapsing the place. It makes it fairly difficult to be disorganized.

What I would suggest would be a small city that started out fairly organized and completely stable. Then they fall on bad times or a bad leader comes into place, and the clientele of the place starts to degrade. The place eventually falls into mild disrepair and general filth, sort of the locale you were talking about, albeit with a higher degree of organized layout. As a side idea, I think it would be interesting if there were a sort of slum off to the side of the city. When encountering heavy populations, lower class dwarves could try to build homes into the city's borders, but their lack of skill would lead to haphazard buildings. These buildings would become poor houses of sorts and would be subject to the occasional collapse. What say you?

I actually like Lanky's idea. It would add depth to the culture of the Dwarves, as we would have some poorer, less skilled individuals in the picture. That's one area I don't think Middle Earth is realistic in - there really are no poor or dumb elves or dwarves (just hobbits!).

It could end up being like a subterranean Jabba's palace! (JK!!!!)

Seriously, though. Good idea.

yup. thats pretty much what i was getting at. I imagine there'd be lots of cheap work, because the inhabitants would constantly be clearing out sand and cave-ins and such. but, i agree with both of you.

BJ! make a name for it! lol

I'll try!!! I haven't even begun to think of the Dwarf language yet, though! I do know that it's going to be influence by the sounds of Russian and German. So now I have to do my research.

Underground city Empty Light in the tunnels

Post  Terry Tue Mar 26, 2013 11:28 pm

What if the city had a huge number of mirrors reflecting the sunlight/moonlight down from any entrance to different parts of the city, so to give it its primary source of light? It makes sense for the dwarfs to have the know-how to craft mirrors if they can craft glass... It would also ad an interesting dynamic to tunnels, as they would have mirrors at every corner.

I think if mirrors were used for lighting, they could only be used for very particular places and not be widespread. These could be either for homes of the extremely wealthy, key rooms of the government, and possibly for large public spaces. The logistics of calculating all the required angles as well as the tunnels and passages for the light to pass through would limit its availability.

However, I think the lighting through mirrors idea is very limited. The angles of the sun not only changes throughout the day, but also through the course of the years. A single configuration of mirrors might only provide light for a couple hours a few days a year. Simple lamps would probably prove more reliable for day-to-day activities. Perhaps dwarves would use the technology as a sort of time-keeping mechanism. Give them something to tell how many days are in a year (though I don't think the lighting should mark the beginning of their year). Perhaps it could lead to times when various ceremonies were performed.

In order to maximize the beam of light on an area, what about aiming the light beams into crystals to spread the light?

I agree! I think less of the idea after dwelling on it for a while. I think that the idea of it lighting large, public spaces would make the most sense.

Great idea! It would make sense that the dwarfs, craftsmen of glass, would create glass objects specifically for this purpose.

This idea has really grown on me. I can see a Tale of Two Cities-esque conflict coming up at some point between these two segments of Dwarven society. It could be a really great story.

As far as the mirror lighting goes. I agree with what you two agreed on. Large open spaces (meeting halls, council rooms, etc.) should be the ones that the Under Dwarves give this treatment to. And the crystals to disperse the light would be a natural progression of this.

I'll come up with a name and put what we've agreed upon on the wiki.

This idea has been added to the wiki page "The Underground City".
